Gillespie Field in El Cajon, California

Located in the city of El Cajon in San Diego County, California, Gillespie Field is the oldest of the eight airports in San Diego County. It was originally built as a Marine Corps parachutist facility, and in 1947 it became a public airport. The airfield has three runways and can accommodate both light and heavy jet aircraft, including the private planes that service the local community. A large number of businesses operate at the field, and it boosts the economy by about $10 million per year.

The field is a favorite of aviation enthusiasts, and it has two museums. One of the museums is the San Diego Air & Space Museum, which opened a 10,000 square foot hangar on the east side of the airport. This hangar displays an array of historic and modern military jets, as well as small racing airplanes. The Air & Space Museum is staffed by dedicated volunteers who repair and build replicas of these historic aircraft. It also operates a functioning wind tunnel.

The other museum is the Warbirds West Air Museum, which is located on the north side of the airport. The site has a variety of aircraft, including a P2 Neptune, S-3 Viking, and Baron Hilton’s Staggerwing. The site is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 AM to 4 PM. There is an admission charge, but it is free for children 11 years and under.

The site also has an open house on December 13, and it will feature over 40 antique and classic cars. Visitors can also walk up to the planes and see them in flight. The Warbirds West Air Museum is a great place to bring your kids to learn about the history of aviation. The site is also a good place to see the B-17 “Nine O Nine,” a World War II aircraft that can reach 310 mph. It is one of only eight flying in the United States.

The San Diego wing of the Commemorative Air Force will present the Wings Over Gillespie Air Show at Gillespie Field. The show is being held in honor of the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. It will also include over 70 static vintage aircraft, battle re-creations, and aerobatic routines. Previously known as the AirShow San Diego, the event will be taking place at the Gillespie Field for the first time since 2010.

A third museum is the Air & Space Museum restoration hanger, which is on the northeastern corner of the airport. This hanger is home to over two dozen aircraft, including the Atlas Missile and F-102A Delta Dagger. This hanger is open to the public, and aviation enthusiasts can tour the restoration shop. The hanger is about a mile from the Orange Trolley Line stop at the Gillespie Field Station.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum is an important part of the local community. The museum is open to the public, and the annex at Gillespie Field is a busy restoration and repair facility. Its restoration shops are staffed by highly skilled volunteers who restore and build the historic aircraft from scratch.
